Famed for making pungently medicinal whisky, this south-coast distillery is far from a one-trick pony. It’s not all about iodine, and for Lp1 we carefully married a handful of casks from a single late-1990s vintage to focus on different types of smokiness.
Core FlavourSweet peat and sooty lemons
Cask detailsRefill hogsheads.
NoseInitially the whisky is quite shy, revealing hints of sweetness, but after a short time in the glass it roars into life. Layers of wood smoke, tar and peat appear with sweet spice and singed lemons.
PalateSweet and honeyed to start, with oatcakes and melon, but then the smoke appears again: coal, beach bonfires, black pepper, black cardamom and rich earth. Water softens the smoke and reveals a core of brown-sugar sweetness.
FinishWaves of smoke.
